Minister of National Security, Sen. the Hon. Dwight Nelson, has congratulated the Mandeville community for the successful implementation of a closed-circuit television surveillance (CCTV), saying it is an important step in crime prevention and the effort to improve public safety.

The Minister was speaking yesterday (Sunday June 28) during a church service to launch the system.  The service which was held at the Mandeville Baptist Church had in attendance, members of the police force, representatives of the Manchester Chamber of Commerce and scores of residents.

Minister Nelson said the system will go a long way in helping to combat the rising levels of violence and crime creeping into once peaceful, low-crime towns and communities such as Mandeville.

He said to this end, CCTV will allow for early intervention of crime by deploying officers more quickly in response to transgressions in progress, and will also facilitate a faster pursuit of suspects after an incident has occurred.

According to Superintendent Royland Salmon, the surveillance system has already experienced some success, pointing out that in a single day,  CCTV was instrumental in the detection of 162 breaches of the Road Traffic Act.

The system was also helpful in detecting persons selling illicit drugs and two men alleged to have committed rape.

Both Minister Nelson and President of the Manchester Chamber of Commerce Winston Lawson acknowledged the challenges that Mandeville may face in light of the economic downturn and the fallout from the bauxite-alumina industry. But, Mr. Lawson said with the execution of CCTV, “We are sending the message that the parish is still open for business and closed to crime.”

Mandeville is the second town in Jamaica to have CCTV installed within its environs. The system was launched in May Pen in December 2008.

The Montego Bay system is currently up for tender, the Security Minister said, and research is underway for systems to be installed in Portmore, Ocho Rios and Kingston.
